Easy Ways On How To Make Alkaline Water At Home Plus Benefits And Side Effects

Do you want to save money on alkaline water? If so one of the best options is learning how to make alkaline water at home. You should also know the benefits and side-effects. Learn more here!

Water pouring on glass

Are you looking for healthier drinking water? Global revenue for bottled water was over $286.2 in 2019. In recent years one of the trending options is alkaline water. Supporters claim that since tap water is often below the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for pH levels, the answer is more alkaline water. That is why some people want to learn how to make alkaline water at home. However, it is necessary to know whether this option is a better option versus others like Perrier mineral water.

One of the main issues with modern diets is people aren’t getting many of the trace minerals early humans did. For example, factors like highly-processed food, water treatments, cigarette smoking, prescription meds, and lack of exercise are affecting the number of trace minerals in human bodies. A related issue is people’s bodily fluids like blood has become more acidic than alkaline. The goal of alkaline water is to fix this problem by making blood and other fluids less acidic. That said, there are also possible side-effects/risks to know about like nausea, vomiting, and confusion.

What Exactly Is Alkaline Water?

It can be tough to sort through the tons of bottled water products on the market. That shouldn’t be surprising since the global market is worth over $286 BILLION. Bottled water has been around for quite a while. The first US product was sold by Jackson’s Spa 250+ years ago in Boston (1767).

Today the number of options on supermarket shelves seems endless. For example, there’s mineral water, distilled water, vitamin water, sparkling water, and flavored water.

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that water be between 6.5 and 8.5 on the pH scale. On this skate, a pH level of 7 is neutral. Meanwhile, if the water is below 7, it is classified as acidic. So while the FDA allows tap water to be slightly acidic US tap water tends to range from 4.3 to 5.3.

That explains why the demand for alkaline water has spiked in recent years. This water has higher hydrogen levels. Fans claim that this provides better hydration versus standard water.

Meanwhile, critics argue that there are some other issues to consider. One is that little scientific research seems to support the claims. It’s also noted that the body is hardwired to balance pH levels automatically.

How to Make Alkaline Water at Home

Lemon Juice

It might seem odd since lemon is an acidic fruit, right? The juice itself is indeed very acidic, and usually has a pH level with 0 being the most acidic. However, it’s all about how the body processes the citric fruit. When that happens, it’s believed it can ironically alkalize the blood. Another big plus is the high Vitamin C content that provides a powerful antioxidant.

Water Filtration

It can be in the form of a pitcher or water filtration system. Both options provide the same effects. The goal is to filter out water. A system is generally more effective than water filter pitchers at alkalizing water. It is important to check out how the unit/system works. Pitchers sometimes can slightly alkalize water, although it’s not always the case.

A filtration system tends to be more effective. That’s because it adds trace minerals like calcium and magnesium into the water, which boosts the pH level slightly. There are different systems, including under-sink and whole-house. Look for highly-tested systems like reverse osmosis.

Water Ionizer

That is the most efficient method for home water alkalizing. This system works by using something called electrolysis. That separates the positive/negative electrodes. You get an acidic and alkaline water stream.

One of the benefits of water ionizing is it’s more cost-effect than other options. Another benefit is it’s more eco-friendly since it doesn’t require plastic bottles.

Baking Soda

This ingredient has a high pH level (9), so it’s an effective way to alkalize water. You can alkalize water, by simply adding some baking soda to purified H2O. Just make sure to dissolve the baking soda completely, so it’s evenly distributed in the water.

pH Drops

This product has a high amount of minerals/electrolytes. You just have to add a couple of drops to a glass of water to boost the pH levels. Since you’re just adding drops a typical bottle can make hundreds of glasses/cups of water. Another plus is it’s more flexible since it’s a lot easier to carry drops around with you versus lemon juice or baking soda.

Alkaline Water: Benefits, Side-Effects, and Sources

There are various claimed benefits of alkaline water including:

It’s worth noting that these are only claimed benefits. There’s little scientific evidence that alkalized water can provide all these benefits. It can certainly hydrate since it’s water, although there are big question marks about whether it can help to fight off cancer cells, for example.

There are various possible side-effects you might experience including:

  • Vomiting
  • Calcium loss
  • Confusion
  • Face tingling
  • Hand tremors
  • Hand twitching
  • Nausea

These side-effects can be linked to other substances and health conditions. It’s important to watch out for multiple ones. If you experience several you should contact your doctor. He/She might recommend you stop consuming alkaline water immediately.

There are also natural and artificial alkalizing sources. For example, natural alkalizing takes place when river water flows over rocks, for example. This is what you get when buying products like Perrier.

It’s another situation with most store-bought alkalizing waters. That’s because the alkalization was done through various artificial methods. Such methods can certainly make H2O more alkaline but natural methods are still more effective than learning how to make alkaline water at home.
