The Free Radical Theory Of Aging: A Brief Overview

Scientist Denham Harman formally suggested this theory 60+ years ago in 1956. The theory argues that aging results from damage that free radicals cause to cells due to oxidative stress. his theory about the damage free radicals can cause is well-known by the general public.

However, this theory is different because it argues that free radicals don’t just cause illness/disease. It’s claimed that they can affect people’s lifespans, which is a different story. This means that free radicals aren’t just the possible key to general health. They might hold the key to living longer.

This could affect various areas related to health issues. For example, it highlights the importance of using methods to limit the damage caused by free radicals. This is something that people should do anyway. However, if they can cause people to live shorter lives, it’s especially important to fight the molecules.    

It also stresses the importance of antioxidants. That’s because they’re the main way we can fight back against free radicals. So, it’s not just enough to drink orange juice if we’re sick. It’s important to boost our body’s antioxidant levels to increase our lifespan.

There are various ways we can boost our antioxidants. They include consuming nutrients like Vitamins A, C, and E. Several different foods contain these nutrients. So, it would be especially important to foods like sweet potatoes, apples, and fatty fish.

It’s interesting that while this theory has existed for over half a century, it’s still being debated. That’s because there’s some debate about how dangerous free radicals are to the human body. There’s a difference between causing illness and shorter lives.

More research is needed. However, there’s no doubt that it’s important to boost our bodies’ antioxidant levels so they can fight off free radicals and their damage to human cells.
